Simple Book Review Template for Beginners

A simple book review template gives you somewhere to start. Writing a review should not feel like applying for a job at a library guarded by dragons. If you have read the book and can explain what you thought, you already have enough.

The best beginner reviews are simple. They tell readers what kind of book it is, what worked, what did not work, and who might enjoy it. You do not need grand literary language. You need honesty, clarity, and a little kindness.

Here is the easiest structure.

Start with the setup

First, say what the book is about in one or two sentences. Do not retell the whole plot. A review is not a shadow version of the book. Mention the main character, the situation, and the promise of the story.

Example: “This is a quiet historical novel about a young woman trying to rebuild her life after war changes her family forever.”

Explain your response

Second, say what you liked. Be specific. Instead of “the characters were good”, say, “the main character felt real because she made small, believable mistakes.” Instead of “the writing was nice”, say, “the writing was gentle, clear, and easy to settle into.”

Third, say what did not work for you. This is where many new reviewers panic. Do not be cruel, but do not pretend either. A useful review can say, “The middle felt slow”, or “I wanted more from the ending”, or “The romance moved too quickly for me.” That helps other readers decide.

Fourth, include the impact. This is the part many reviews miss. What stayed with you? A character? A setting? A feeling? A line of thought? You can write, “The scene between the sisters stayed with me because it felt honest without becoming dramatic.”

Find the right reader

Finally, recommend the book to the right reader. This is the golden sentence: “I would recommend this to readers who enjoy slow-burn family stories with emotional endings.”

A simple review is not a lesser review. Readers need a clear opinion with reasons, not an impressive collection of adjectives.
