A gripping psychological thriller, And Then You Were Gone by R.J. Jacobs delivers a fast-paced mystery with a unique protagonist.
The story follows Emily Firestone, a woman managing bipolar disorder while navigating a relationship with her boyfriend, Paolo. When Paolo mysteriously disappears during a weekend getaway, Emily finds herself the prime suspect. With her mental health working against her credibility, she must unravel the truth before it’s too late.
Jacobs does an excellent job portraying Emily’s inner struggles, making her a compelling but unreliable narrator. The pacing is strong, and the tension builds well, though I found it hard to connect with the supporting characters. Overall, it’s an intriguing read that will keep you turning the pages, but it left me wanting a little more depth.
