Looking for Jane
What a wonderful debut for Heather Marshall. I hope she continues to write Canadian historical fiction, because I am here for it! This book was highly recommended by the Canadian bookstagram community, and I was recommending it before having even read it. Is there historical fiction about abortion rights in Canada? Yes please! Now that I have read it, this book is about so much more than that. It's about motherhood, courage, and belief. Women born after 1988 (aka me) were blessed with the best gift of all: having a choice.
This road was paved by strong women and Canadian MVP Dr. Mogentaler. This book was a beautiful tribute to all the Janes. The ones who fought were the ones who were forced to give up their babies. The ones who risked their lives or lost their lives due to a lack of options and choices. My heart aches for the Janes of other countries, because even though this is part of our past, it's considered current events in other parts of the world.
